Chapel Lane, Saxtead

In Feb 1991, Eastern Electricity Plc applied for planning to start a very early deployment, across the tops of the nearby powerlines.

The application was for the ” ERECTION OF REPEATER STATION TO HOUSE EQUIPMENT TO AMPLIFY TELECOMMUNICATION SIGNALS WITHIN NEW FIBRE OPTIC CABLE. ”

This unit is a pre-fab, housing optical hardware, a diesel generator and a power cabinet. It appears to be owned by UK Power Networks and as fibre isn’t in their offering, we would guess, it’s for the UK – GERMANY 5 cable coming out of Winterton. Built by Fujitsu & Northern Installer in 1991, funded by MCL, BT & German PTT.

Rated at install at 3.6 Gb/s consisting of 2 fibre pairs at 1.8 Gb/s each. This route would be perfect from Winterton through Saxtead and via Ipswitch on its way to London.
